LEADER GUIDE

OPENING PRAYER & WORSHIP

Before you officially begin, allow time for people to catch up and get comfortable with being online.

Open in prayer, asking God to fill your time together.

Play the song You Will Never Fail.

The idea here is simply to give space to open our hearts to God. It doesn’t matter if people sing or not. You can use the “present” or “share screen” feature on your virtual platform to display video or just audio. Be sure to ask group members to mute their own audio and even their video to limit distractions. Encourage them to simply reflect on the words and on who God is.

To learn how to share your screen with the audio, click HERE.

2. Read Genesis 3:1-15. What do we learn about the enemy’s tactics or strategy in this passage?

Bonus Question: Compare and contrast Adam and Eve’s response to temptation with Jesus’ response in Matthew 4:1-11.

– Satan played on Adam’s and Eve’s desire; God is keeping you from what is best
– Satan’s initial approach is to deceive, not deny; to cause doubts, not disobedience
– Satan makes us question God’s word, commands, and goodness
– Adam was passive – makes him vulnerable
– Adam and Eve were not BELIEVING the promises of God, even though they were speaking them

“The simplest [thing] is to turn their [believers] eyes away from Him towards themselves. Keep them watching their own minds and trying to produce feelings there by the action of their own wills.”
– C.S. Lewis in The Screwtape Letters, referring to Satan’s tactic to separate man from God.

3. What hints of God’s plan of redemption over the enemy do we see in this passage?

Verse 15 – God was already revealing HIs plan to defeat Satan and offer salvation through HIs Son. Satan’s defeat is implied by the serpent’s head being crushed, which is certainly more damaging than the bruise (or strike) of the heel for the offspring of Eve. For this reason, v.15 has been labeled the “Protoevangelium,” the first announcement of the gospel.

Reading ahead in Verse 21 – God is not just a God of justice, but of gracious provision. Thus, He made for Adam and Eve garments from the skins of animals to cover their nakedness. In order to make this clothing of skin, an animal had to die. Accordingly, a veiled prophecy of redemption through the shedding of blood. This is the first recorded physical death in Scripture.

5. Where is Satan attacking you in this season?

6. What do you need to do or be reminded of to withstand Satan’s attacks?

First, we must realize we are being tempted. Temptation runs much deeper than simply ‘bad behavior’. Many temptations take place on the heart level first – what do you find your heart treasuring? Where are you hopeless? Anxious? Discontent? Jealous? Angry? Impatient? Not present emotionally?

Second, the antidote for temptation is not simply finding ways to avoid it, but rather being filled with the satisfying goodness of God’s presence and being reminded of his promises. What helps you do that? Who helps you do that?

Also see Matthew 4:1-11 to see how Jesus responded to Satan’s temptations.

Live It Out

Purpose: Spend time listening for God’s direction and guidance as you seek to live out the truths of this passage in your everyday life.

7. Read 2 Timothy 2:13 together. Even when we fail, God is faithful to us.

You can also look at 1 Corinthians 10:13

Spend some individual time praying through the following questions as you listen to this song: Hope Has A Name

What do you need to confess to God? Where in your life do you need God’s faithfulness?
One suggestion in this time is to allow your group to turn off their videos and to just sit with God as the two songs play. Encourage them to journal. After the songs are done allow your group time to process the questions.

8. Share about your experience listening to the song and praying. Pray over each other as you are led.

Another variation here would be to play the song and have each person write their prayer requests in the chat. You can pray over them individually as the song plays or you can pray over them at the end.
