GROUP DISCUSSION

Lean In

Purpose: Introduce topic and get the group talking.

1.Describe a time when you benefited from someone’s act of selfless service.

Look Down

Purpose: Observe the passage and interact with the text

In this series, we’re looking at 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and connecting it to other passages in the Scriptures. This week’s verses have an overarching theme of selfless service (“not self-seeking” in v. 5). To unpack this phrase, we will dive into Philippians 2:1-11.

As a group, read 1 Corinthians 13:5 and Philippians 2:1-11.

2. What connections do you see between these two passages as they describe the selfless aspects of love?

3. Why is humility so important for unity and love within a church/family/friends?

4. What about Jesus’ example in Phil. 2 is worth following as a model for our lives?

Look Out

Purpose: Connect observations in God’s Word with observations in our world today.

5. What does the world think humility is? (How do they describe it?)

6. Do you think that a person can be humble and confident at the same time? Give an example from your own life to back up your answer.

7. What’s dangerous about humility? Why is it so hard for people to live with humility? Why is it easier to live pridefully?

Look In

Purpose: Internalize God’s Word and apply the truth to your personal life.

8. What steps can you take to grow in humility? What role does the Holy Spirit play in that growth?

9. In a 24-hour period, how often do you “look to the interests of others” (v 4) and actually serve someone else?

10. As a group, how are you currently living “selflessly” for others outside the group? Brainstorm a way your group can press in and follow Jesus’ example of service this coming week/month.

Live It Out

Purpose: Spend time listening for God’s for direction and guidance as you seek to live out the truths of this passage in your everyday life.

11. Spend some time reflecting on your own life. Ask the Holy Spirit to make you aware of any areas of pride or places you lack humility.

Open your pray with… Lord, show me where I am prideful and where I need to be humble like Christ…

12. If comfortable, share with the group what came to mind during that time. Then, pray for those that shared. Spend some time listening to God, asking him how to pray. After the prayer, invite those who were prayed for to share how they sensed God speaking to them.

Jesus being fully God and fully man could have fully leveraged his deity, and yet set it aside for the purpose of drawing ALL to Himself. His example to us is an example of perfect example of humility.

8. What steps can you take to grow in humility? What role does the Holy Spirit play in that growth?

Being open to the Holy Spirit is the first step. Growing in this humility is not finding it in yourself – it’s something that is shown to you.

It’s a work of the Holy Spirit initially that draws us into humility. One of the primary avenues for humility is the awareness of our sin.

Open your prayer with…
Lord, show me where I am prideful and where I need to be humble like Christ…

Remind the group that we are trying to listen to what God has for us, not just creating our own next steps or going with our own opinions. We are inviting God to give us wisdom and guidance. Then spend time as a group processing what each individual thought they heard through this time.

12. If comfortable, share with the group what came to mind during that time. Then, pray for those that shared. Spend some time listening to God, asking him how to pray. After the prayer, invite those who were prayed for to share how they sensed God speaking to them.

End the night praying for the whole group to grow in humility.
